247) Star Trek: The Best of Both Worlds (1990)
In this story, the Enterprise must battle the Borg who are intent on conquering Earth, with a captured and assimilated Captain Picard as their emissary.
5/10 – This was suggested to me, as a challenge, for someone who doesn’t particularly get along with sci-fi films. This two-part TV special, joined together, re-released and restored on Blu-Ray was not something I had anticipated watching. It wasn’t entirely bad, and clearly I can’t appreciate it to its fullest potential without watching everything before it. Therefore, it is difficult in this instance to give it a fair grading, but a few points stood out to me.
Everything is overly pronounced, and I couldn’t work out if it was because they were bad actors or were supposed to be supremely intelligent to the extent that nothing was ever pronounced even the slightest bit wrong. If that is the case, it doesn’t excuse the lack of emotion in anything they said either.
From a storyline perspective, I get it. I get why people like this, and I get why it is considered to be one of the best things they have put out. It just isn’t for me. I don’t buy the crappy outfits of the Borg, or the rigid acting from Riker, or feel any kind of investment in this film … I could go on. But I won’t. I will not be watching any more of these, and it reaffirmed my opinion on sci-fi as a genre. I just don’t get along with it.
