Gangs of New York (2002)

192) Gangs of New York (2002)

In 1863, Amsterdam Vallon returns to the Five Points area of New York City seeking revenge against Bill the Butcher, his father’s killer.

7/10 – I really don’t care if it is historically inaccurate. It’s going to be near impossible to make a film to everyone’s liking, but you have to admire Scorseses talent in this movie. If you take this at face value what you are presented with, it is a compelling story, with excellent performances, set against an impressive backdrop of 1860’s New York. It’s hard to not enjoy it. Although, I don’t feel it lived up to the hype. It seemed like it went on for 20-30 minutes longer than it needed to, which meant the intensity of this revenge plot was weakened over time. Had it of been condensed, then the anticipation and unnerving aspects that I love from this type of story-line would have been much more prominent.

It’s worth watching just for Daniel Day Lewis’s performance alone though, even if he does sound like Vic Reeves in Catterick.
